I still don't get what the heck crew is for!

What is it for. It's description in the FAQs is exacly like the cannons.

the crew is like your posse, and they help intimidate enemies when you get into a street fight.

i know this is in a different thread but it kind of applies to the discussion about attacks costing moves. when you upgrade cannons (and crew) it's just adding *more* to your ship not increasing the distance you can fire to so it should still cost moves to attack ships. again i concur that having a 'fast' ship should affect how many moves it costs you though.
