Okay, it was only for five silver dubloons, but they will be helpful when I'm sweating it out with two moves left and a fame of 252.

Newbies, don't give up hope. I know that it seems hard to do anything early in the game, but you CAN earn something. I know that there are noob hints all over, but I thought I'd string a few together to get you in the swing of things.

First, use your gold to build up defense and potentially radar. Yeah, I know, you want to run around hitting everything that moves. Too bad. The big guys are still going to get you, but at least start building your D early for when you are big and powerful down the line.

Second, and this may be controversial, keep your attacks to a minimum. Yeah, I know. Towns are easy and a source of gold. Too bad. Don't let your Fame get over nine or ten, because some pirate that you can't see because his/her radar is higher than yours will take you out. You will build gold more slowly this way, but you will also lose a heck of a lot less.

Third, keep a "move countdown clock" set to about 200. Once you have 200 moves or fewer on the day, keep an eye out for the next Fame Reset. Once your fame is down to zero, don't attack ANYTHING for the rest of the day. With fewer than 200 moves, it's too dangerous to let your Fame run, since you may not find another reset before running out of moves.

Fourth, make a friggin' map. Yeah, I know, it takes a while. Too bad. When you only have a few moves left and you need an island cluster to try for a fame reset, you'll be happy for your map.

Fifth, try and spend as much of your gold each night, since the big dogs will hit you in overnight play. This is really why having a low Fame matters, since you reach the point toward the end of the month when you cannot get your next upgrade with only one day's gold. But if your fame is zero and you go to sleep with 10,000 gold, you'll wake up with 8-9,000 the next day. That's still okay!

Sixth, as the end of the month comes, you'll probably have to take a few more chances. In the last week, start to calculate how much you'll need to cash out. The cash out page is real-time, so you'll have a good idea of what you'll need. You may have to hit a few towns to build that gold, but your map will help you find the nearest islands where you can hope for a fame reset. Go to bed on the last night with a zero fame level.
