I have had at least "Congartulations your fame level has changed" messages when searching islands over the past 2 days, but, when I check my stats it still shows Fame 0. Why is this?

That's a good thing dread. When you find one it resets your fame level. The lower your fame level the less gold other pirates will plunder.

Well then that's good. Do levels go below 0, -1, -2, etc.?

No 0 is the lowest it goes.
