If you cannot or do not want to use the Java version of the chat room (and you have Windows), here is what you can do to connect to it via a more stable way:
1. Download Orion IRC. It is freeware (or, giftware, as the writer calls it), simple, and small. You can get it from:
ftp://debian.lcs.mit.edu/pub/winsite/wi ... nSetup.exe
2. Run the setup file. Choose all of the default options except for "Create Desktop Icon" and "Create Quick Launch Icon" and install. Uncheck "view readme.txt" and click finish. It will automatically launch for the first time, and then be available in your start menu afterwards.
3. When the program starts, go to Server -> Connect. On the "server details" tab, type in "irc.criten.net" into the description and server fields. Go to the "user information" tab and fill in this information if you want to. Set your nickname to your game name if you want people to recognize you from the game. Click on the "connection" tab and check "Connect on startup" and "show the message of the day". Click on the "On Connect" tab and type the following into "automatically join channels":
Quote:
#piratetheworld
4. When you click connect, it will connect you to the server and open the PTW chat room. Every time after this, you will not need to set it up--it will connect automatically when you open the program.
Here are a few helpful IRC commands:
Quote:
/NICK new-nickname
Change the nickname by which you are known. For example, if your default nick was "foo" and you want to change it to "YourNick":
/NICK YourNick
*** foo is now known as YourNick
Quote:
/ME does something
Performs an action on a channel. Unlike talking normally, actions do not start with <YourNick>. Use /ME in the third person (verbs like "is", "does", "runs", etc.).
/ME is a pink bunny
YourNick is a pink bunny
Quote:
/MSG nickname message
Use the /MSG command to send someone a message that only that person can read. Say you are "YourNick" and you want to talk to your friend "buddy".
/MSG buddy hello, how are you?
On your screen, you would see:
-> *buddy* Hello, how are you?
On buddy's screen, he sees:
*YourNick* Hello, how are you?
Quote:
/QUERY nickname
Opens a private message window with someone. Similar to the /MSG command, but much easier and less combersome for extended conversations.
/QUERY buddy
You can also (in Orion), right-click on someone and choose "Open a query".
